The most important purpose behind the college application essay is to allow the admissions committee to get deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the applicants. Therefore, the content of this essay should not be a simple academic background or some simple lists, but should focus on what you think, observe, reflect and learn from your experiences.
The application essay will examine the students’ ability to grasp their inner self, so-called self-mastery. The essay also demands an expression of maturity of students. The essay article likes the students to learn to some extent analyze real-world problems.
This first tip for writing college application essay is to be yourself. Per my understanding, this point should be most important aspect out of all you should care about. Everyone is unique, so do you. If you can be yourself, you would definitely become special to admission committee. When you manage to be unique, don’t get into wrong trail. That means you need to focus on what admission officers is looking for. For example, you trip to south Africa may be unique, but you have to consider what this trip can tell admission officer about you. Let them know you like travelling? It is obviously not enough. What admission officers are looking for is your potential to be a leader, to be team player, to be someone who may have positive influence on this world.
This second tip for college application essay is to be interesting. Every year, many strong applicants fail not because their background is not good, not because their score is not high. They just could not present their essays in an interesting way. Admission officers have go through hundreds of thousands of essays. They are so bored and insensitive to what you write in the essay. If you hope to impress them, you have to be interesting.
The third tip for college application essay is never to tell a lie. Many applicants are tempted to brag to some extend or to tell something that does not happen. These applicants think it is impossible for admission committee to know about details. But believe, don’t do this. It is definitely not worth it. Every admission officer has interviewed hundreds of application. They really know where applicants may brag. They are very good at asking right question to find if you are not honest. You would definitely betray yourself because they are so experienced but you are not. You could make it unless you are born liar.

Please note that each "round" represents a distinct period in which you may apply, not a succession of steps for your application. You may apply in one round only, one time in an application year.
Given past experience, we anticipate that many candidates will submit their online application materials very close to 12 noon on submission deadline dates. To avoid heavy server traffic and potential delays, we encourage candidates to submit application materials as early as possible.
Applications received after 12 noon on October 3, 2011 will be considered in Round 2. Applications received after 12 noon on January 10, 2012 will be considered in Round 3. Applications received after 12 noon on April 10, 2012 will not be considered.
When Should I Apply?
To avoid overwhelming server traffic generated by the high volume of applications we receive, candidates are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible prior to the deadline of each round.
We encourage applicants to apply in the first or second round, as space in the class may be limited by the third round. In addition, applying in the earlier rounds will give candidates more time to address the following:
- International candidates needing visas will find that applying in Round 3 makes the timing of their visa application stressful.
- International candidates admitted in Rounds 1 and 2 find that it's helpful to have the additional time to work on English proficiency.
- Some candidates may be required to complete preliminary course work prior to their enrollment.
- Many deadlines for outside (non-Harvard Business School) fellowships are in early spring. Only students who have been accepted are eligible for these fellowships.
- Financial aid is available regardless of when students are admitted. However, since admitted students may apply for financial aid only after they are admitted Round 3 admits have less time to prepare their application.
- Harvard Business School residence halls and Harvard University-affiliated apartments are assigned by lottery. Deadlines for both of these housing options precede Round 3 notification, and you must be admitted to HBS before you can enter these lotteries
