My diversified experience has forged my ability to lead multinational team, my entrepreneurial spirit and my comprehensive insights into the telecom and IT industry. I have been exploiting internet to facilitate people’s life and strengthen corporation’s competitiveness. My short-term post-Fuqua career goal is to engage in strategy planning for IT and telecom corporations to sharpen my mind and hunt untapped internet opportunity. 3-5 years after completing DUKE MBA program, I aspire to create my own internet company.

 

Seven years ago, I followed my entrepreneurial impulse to launch a company providing technical consulting. Through differentiated competition strategy, I won the first consulting project from Guangdong Power against large state-owned company. Later, considering that small startup should concentrate its limited resource on key customers, I decided to target at the high-end niche market. Using this strategy, I developed relationships with prominent companies, including Nokia, China Mobile. After two years of operation, I found that being in a niche market enables my company to survive, but growing my company is difficult. To get familiar with how a great company works. I joined telecom giant, Motorola, in 2005.

 

5 years of Motorola experience as team leader on large international telecom projects extraordinarily exercised my leadership skills and instilled me strong cross-culture adaptability. In Taiwan, I motivated a special team, whose members would be fired at the conclusion of the project, to complete $200M projects. In Kuwait, I coordinated a team comprising of people from more than ten countries to meet an impossible deadline because during Ramadan we were not permitted to conduct work as usual and to eat food during daytime in accordance with Islamism habit. Wearing white robe to demonstrate my respect for their religion and working together throughout four consecutive nights to resolve unexpected issues, I developed friendship with team members and built their confidence in my leadership and devotion. The project was ultimately successful, strengthening Motorola’s edge in winning a potential $100M follow-up contract. I was thus granted Motorola Quality Award.

 

From 2005, in order to boost competitiveness of my startup, I established an internet forum, bbs.itgoal.com, which has become one of leading forums on telecom field in China and about 190,000 professionals are utilizing the forum to discuss hottest topics in the field. My expertise on both internet and telecom assisted my startup to win a consulting project for sales and marketing department of Nokia Siemens Network about how to leverage the impact of internet on telecom industry. The first phase of consulting in Beijing achieved huge success and HongKong and Taiwan offices of NSN purchased the service too.

 

My experience in creating a start-up, as well as leading team in Motorola has enabled me to accumulate rich entrepreneurial practice and leadership skills. However, there is still a gap between my career goal and my resource. In 2005, I attempted to lunch a childrearing website but was unable to find an investor. Two years later, two MBAs realized same idea to establish babytree.com and received $10M VC from Matrix Partners China. Therefore, I see earning an MBA at DUKE now as a way to help me grow my knowledge as well as capitalize on my existing skills in order to make a breakthrough in my career. Fuqua’s well-balanced strength on management, marketing and entrepreneurship as well as global mindset will not only bestows me knowledge of running a bigger company but also consolidates my entrepreneurial spirit and build a supportive network.
